Self Assessment

Overall, I believe I didn’t do too bad with visual communications. I came up with a solid ethical issue, gambling in video games, that I was able to follow through with. This is already an improvement on last year with the FMP which I completely changed the theme around have way through. One of my standout works is the siren character development pages as well as the background work I have done based on Dave McKean. With the siren work I tried (and succeeded) at emulating professional practice from my knowledge. Using those methods I was able to come up with inventive and creative designs. Emulating and taking inspiration from Dave McKean’s work was fun and quite freeing due to the almost whimsical and chaotic his backgrounds are. The results I was able to achieve look close to his own work, so I am pretty proud of that.

However, this project got off to a rocky start as I spent the first two to three weeks worrying about the result and what I was aiming for. After a while I was able to come up with a basic idea but something I need to aim for in the future is to just start experimenting as I will come up with an idea naturally during the process. What I could do to aid in this is to do more research into various artists at the start for a starting point. My holiday homework also looked a little disorganized due to vast differences between the postcards, both subject wise and in terms of quality. Another improvement I can make is to use more influences I my development to help build and explore my idea. At the start of the project my time was not used as effectively as it could’ve been but that got better as time went on. In my final piece, I feel like I could’ve communicated the idea behind it more effectively, but I won't deny that it is, all in all, not that bad. However, I underestimated how long it would take to draw, paint, scan and edit my images into photoshop. This left me under pressure to get it all done and maybe ended up with some things rushed. What I should do in the future is to just keep on working and not think `oh I've got two weeks left I'll be fine` because that mentality leads to situations like this.
